The Soviet Union beats the United States winning top honors in the Munich Olympics medal count. Soviet allied-East Germany comes in third, and US-allied West Germany is fourth. Americans feel that the Soviet basketball team conspired with referees to steal the Gold Medal in Basketball away from the US and give it to the Soviets. The Soviet coaches and referees give the Soviets three extra attempts to score 2 points in the final three seconds. The US team refused to sign the score sheet, refused the silver medal and did not attend the medal ceremony or closing ceremonies.
