Nixon’s Nuke Policy Angers Hughes

Nixon press aide, Herb Klein, gave a speech promoting the Anti-ballistic Missile program and more underground tests. Hughes was mad and let it be known that heads would roll. Nixon told Kissinger to meet with Hughes, but Hughes said no – it was too late to make nice. Hughes considered himself at war with Nixon. Maheu had tried to arrange the meeting with his boss and his other bosses, gave fawning quotes about how grateful Hughes was for Nixon’s care and attention. This pissed off Hughes even more.
