Maheu and Meier Notice They’re Both Losing

During the Nevada period, Howard’s orders outside Nevada were frequently ignored. He could have his little half-billion-dollar playground in Nevada, but the Mormon clique, called “the elves” by Maheu, Gay, Davis and Henley directed the course of serious worldwide business for the empire. More of Maheu and Meier’s time was wasted accommodating Hughes’ whims, leaving much of the wheeling-and-dealing to the elves. Along with their own diminished importance, both Maheu and Meier witnessed Howard’s gradual loss of control of his own Empire.
