Hunt Brings Barker to Washington

September 1971: Bernard Barker’s former CIA superior, E. Howard Hunt ”Eduardo” invited Barker to Washington D.C. to visit him at the Mullen PR firm where he worked. There, Hunt recruited Barker for the “Plumbers“, the Nixon White House‘s “Special Investigations Unit”. There was “a matter of national security” to carry out, Hunt apprised him, for an organization “above both the FBI and CIA,” against “a traitor to this country who had given information to a foreign embassy.” He was recruited by Hunt to find background information on Daniel Ellsberg. Along with Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, Barker broke into the office of Ellsberg’s psychiatrist, Dr. Lewis J. Fielding, in Los Angeles. The mission’s purpose was to find discrediting information on Ellsberg. The mission was completed, but largely unsuccessful in finding any damaging information about Ellsberg.
