Black militant, Black Liberation Army. San Francisco, California. Two BLA members in a car are arrested after attempting to machine· gun a police car when both cars were stopped at a traffic light. The machine gun jammed and the police car pursued the suspects’ car until it crashed. The gun found in the car was that taken from slain New York policeman Joseph Piagentini killed on May 21, 1971.

Black militant. Republic of New Africa. Jackson, Mississippi. A police raid on the Republic of New Africa headquarters results in a gun battle in which three police officers are wounded. Lieutenant William Skinner dies of his wounds a few days later.
